Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young kid. Her aunt was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful instrument to engage in activism. DuVernay developed a social mindful by her mother. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family was for many generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury and examine their junk. Her tasks left her disappointed by journalism and she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. From this position she started her own PR company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has launched lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Beauty Collective.
